How to buy your Giralda of seville tickets?

The Giralda is one of the most representative monuments of Seville. It is an old tower made up of three parts where different architectural styles and cultures are mixed.

Unlike other towers, inside, La Giralda does not have stairs, but 35 ramps wide enough for the sultan to climb on horseback to contemplate the wonderful views of the city, which was the capital of Al-Andalus at that time . .

If you dare to climb it, you will be rewarded with the honor of seeing the majesty of Seville at a height of almost 100 meters from the ground.

Great service. Staff at the cathedral were so helpful. Fabulous experience, the Cathedral is amazing, workmanship is awe inspiring.

Although the tour may seem a bit long, it is an interesting visit that allows you to know a bit better the history of Sevilla and, in particular, curiosities about the Cathedral and Alcázar. During the visit to the Cathedral you have 20 min to go to the top of the Giralda and enjoy the views. Our guide Cristina was super nice.

4.7 / 5 star seville guide ticket

Highly recommended to visit

It was erected to call the faithful to prayer. Ends with a sphere that receives the name of a jar and, on it, we find a bronze sculpture that acts as a weather vane.

Considered one of the tallest towers in Europe and the tallest in Andalusia with its highest peak of 104.1 meters. There are seven other similar towers in the world, but they are all copies of this one. For several centuries it was the tallest tower in Europe. In the city of Seville it was the tallest building until the Torre Pelli arrived.

History Giralda of seville

Its construction is attributed to Ahmad Ibn Baso and Ali de Gomara, XII century. The Giralda’s design is inspired by two other minarets: the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakesh and the Hazan Mosque in Rabat .

giralda cathedral seville kutubia

It consists of three parts :

 – Lower one dates from the 12th century and is of Almohad origin. It was part of an Arab mosque located where the current Cathedral is. It was modeled after the Cordoba mosque, with a dome at the top. An earthquake in 1356 caused the destruction of the four bronze spheres that crowned the tower.

 – The upper part is Christian. The Reconquest of Seville dates from the year 1248 by Fernando III. Like the Mosque of Córdoba, the Mosque of Seville was consecrated as a Christian temple. After the earthquake, a cross was placed in the place of the yamur. It was designed by Hernán Ruíz II. It was built as a bell tower, to house the 24 enormous bells it conserves. This part was specifically added in the 16th century.

If you come to Seville, you will fall in love with it.

It will be impossible not to lose your eyes, admiring the impressive watchtower, feeling like a 16th century passer-by.

Giraldillo

 – At the top, we find a bronze sculpture, called El Giraldillo , cast by Bartolomé Morel. Juan Bautista Vázquez the Elder sculpted it. It is the largest statue created during the Renaissance. Its function is a weather vane, since it rotates in the direction of the wind that blows. The name of the tower comes from this figure and not the other way around as is often believed.

There is a replica that can be seen in the Puerta del Príncipe of the Cathedral that was made to replace it in the restoration work in 1981 and weighs 300 kilos. The original sculpture is about 3.47 meters tall and weighs about 1,500 k. She is a woman in a robe, a palm in her left hand and a large shield in her right. Her first name was El Triunfo de la Fe Victoriosa or Santa Juana.

The giraldillo has its own copy while being restored.

The Giraldillo has a reputation for «dragging bad luck» after a laborious restoration work that meant that it had to be lowered from its minaret with cranes in 1999 to return to its place in 2005. Recently, it has been discovered that, after the repair its deterioration has accelerated. It is attributed to the fact that he was not treated with the utmost care during the process. Numerous historians have already seen it as an atrocity to «dismember» the largest sculpture of the Renaissance without knowing how this would affect it.

Some say that El Giraldillo’s days are numbered after conservation work that cost the city of Seville more than half a million euros. The restorers “tremble” just thinking about having to repeat the operation of lowering the sculpture and replacing it with the copy so as not to leave the beloved Giralda unprotected, since a simple gust of wind could cause it to be hit and damaged. irreversibly.

Curiosities Giralda of seville

“Once he commanded me to go and challenge that famous giantess of Seville called the Giralda, who is as brave and strong as made of bronze, and without moving from one place is the most mobile and steadfast woman in the world. I arrived, saw it and defeated it, and made it stand still and at bay, because in more than a week nothing but north winds blew.”

    • Dan Brown , the acclaimed American writer, cites the city several times in his first novel  Digital Fortress . Where stands out the singular inaccurate way of describing how to climb the Giralda (according to him by stairs instead of ramps). It also tells in the novel that the town hall of the city is housed in the Plaza de España,  something wrong since it is located in the new square.
    • To climb the tower we need to go through its 35 ramps, which were built wide enough for the sultan to climb on horseback to admire the views of the city.
    • There are 2 replicas of the Giralda around the world. One housed in the sister city with Seville, Kansas city . Another in the city of Extremadura, Badajoz . There was a third replica in the city of New York that was destroyed to raise another building. We can find a mosque in the city of Koutoubia (Morocco) in which its construction took the Giralda as a reference.
    • Its structure is formed by two cultures, the Muslim part of 1184 and the Christian part that was added in the 16th century. Basically represented by the bell tower and the Giraldillo statue that represents Faith.
    • Recently the fact that its original color was reddish has been known . In Murillo ‘s painting , from 1666, Santas Justa y Rufina, the initial tonality of the watchtower of Seville can be seen. Much of the history of La Giralda is known thanks to this painting by Miguel de Esquivel, who portrayed the frescoes that looked inside the tower, made by Luis de Vargas between 1563 and 1568.

    • The two women are the potters Santa Justa and Santa Rufina, with La Giralda between them. They were two martyrs born in Seville who were executed in Rome. They are the protectors of La Giralda and La Catedral. This painting can be seen inside the Cathedral. Great painters such as Francisco de Goya or Diego Velázquez also wanted to honor them by immortalizing the two saints among their works
    • PRESENT Nowadays, it can be visited through th «Puerta del lagarto».
